Birdwatching with Tim

25 Jun 2021

This time, Tim Ball has spotted five species of owl which are native to Britain: the British Barn owl, Tawny owl, Little owl, Short-eared owl and the Long-eared owl.

Tim said: “Owls in the British countryside, and particularly Barn owls, face a number of challenges from changes to their environment. These include changes in agricultural practice, fewer suitable nesting sites and the building of new roads which means a reduction in their hunting patches and increased collision with traffic.

Their numbers are believed to have fallen dramatically in recent years and there are many conservation projects dedicated to help them overcome these challenges. Most owls are nocturnal or crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), but some may be seen by day.”
